What began as a military assignment for Steve Smart turned into a commitment to Wichita. It’s the place he and his family chose to call home after a permanent change of station from the Pentagon to McConnell Air Force Base in 2014.
The Independence, Missouri native was on active duty in the United States Air Force at the time.
“My wife Randi and I had young children, and we liked the community, the churches and schools, and the people here. We decided this was the best place for us to raise our family,” Smart explained.
While raising his family, Smart grew even more connected to the community. Not only did he serve as the 15th Wing Commander of the 184th at McConnell, but he also joined clubs, explored the city’s remarkable food scene, and more.
His favorite spot is Picasso’s Pizza in Delano. “Best pizza anywhere! Change my mind!” he laughed. He is a big fan of the Wichita Thunder. Smart said it helps that his wife is Canadian!
His family has also found a home at Life Church and within school music programs at Andover Central High School and Friends University.
“Also, shout out to the local club softball, volleyball, and track and field communities. They do so much to develop strong, resilient young people,” he emphasized. “All of these programs have had a tremendously positive impact on our children and family.”
What Makes Wichita Special?
Aside from the good food and slew of things to do, Smart loves the people. If he had to sum up Wichita in three words, they’d be: personable, productive and proud.
“The city and region have a legacy of great people working hard to create world-class products. It is the Air Capital, after all!” he said.
Smart knows firsthand the impact of the Air Capital’s unsung heroes: the dedicated airmen of the 184th Wing and the 931st Air Refueling Wing at McConnell.
“These Kansans, mostly from the Wichita area, are performing some of the most unique and challenging missions in the entire United States military while also serving as local teachers, first responders, doctors, IT professionals, pastors, manufacturers and laborers. You know a guardsman or a reservist, you just might not know it!” he enthusiastically shared.
Smart retired from the Air Force in 2024 and was once again drawn to opportunities outside of Wichita. However, he and his wife chose to stay. Again, he credited the community, churches and schools.
He also found a new way to serve the area as a deputy city attorney for the City of Wichita.
For those new to the area, Steve has some advice: “There is so much to do just within an hour’s drive of the city center,” he said. “Jump in, get involved, and you’ll quickly see why so many people choose to stay.”
