Before social media, blogs ruled the internet. Wichita Mom, formerly known as the Wichita Mom’s Blog, debuted in 2014.
Despite the rise of popular apps like Instagram, X, Snapchat, etc., the go-to resource for family-friendly living in Wichita hasn’t lost its luster. Today, it reaches more than 1 million people a year.
“Our love of the Wichita community and our dedication to providing resources, support, and engaging content for local families is the foundation of who we are – to ultimately make their lives easier,” said Wichita Mom Founder and Director of Operations Angela Green.
Green, a Wichita native, and mom of two girls, ages 9 and 11, started the blog after living on the East Coast for several years.
“My husband and I had just moved back to Wichita and didn’t know anyone,” she explained. “I was looking for ways to connect with other women in a similar stage of life and for fun things to do with my new baby! There really wasn’t a comprehensive resource and so I decided to create it.”
Throughout the years the blog has evolved into a resource for not only moms but visitors, transplants, dads, college students, grandparents, you name it.
“Many of my out-of-town friends who have never lived here think it looks like such a cool city to visit thanks to the content they see on Wichita Mom,” Green said. “What we don’t have with beaches or mountains we make up for in personality and the nicest people you could possibly meet! There is always something to do.”
The website features hundreds of guides to things to do in Wichita including exploring the outdoors, parks, nature trails, events, coffee shops, restaurants, museums, attractions and more.
That, combined with honest parenting stories and ways to get involved in the community has set Wichita Mom apart.
“We have always focused on being a positive light in our community,” said Green. “Our sense of community has been built, brick by brick, very intentionally over the last 10 years. We answer our DMs, emails and provide advice when asked. That can be time-consuming when you reach 150,000 people monthly.”
But it’s worth it. For Green, Wichita isn’t just a city. In her mind, there is no better place to live, work and raise a family.
“I love that Wichita’s nickname is Doo-Dah which can best be described as the “laid-back, whimsical attitude felt by some visitors to the city.” And that’s the truth! We have so many special unique things to do, you just have to really appreciate the city for what it is and the best way to really experience Wichita is to ask a local or check out Wichita Mom,” she said.
