California Family Finds Their Sweet Spot in Wichita

By Emily Barnwell

Coming up on their first anniversary in Wichita, Huber and Carla Pineda say there’s no place like it.

“Wichita has a unique and unmatched essence, and that is the human warmth and gentleness of the people,” the couple shared.

Originally from Guatemala, the Pinedas and their 2-year-old daughter, Ximena, moved from California to Wichita in November 2024 to pursue their American dream – owning and operating a family business.

They thought that dream would flourish in Nebraska, but after spending some time there, they realized it wasn’t the right fit. A stop in Wichita changed everything.

“No traffic, less crime and especially the kindness of everyone in Wichita. It all felt right,” they said.

From Dream to Donuts

In April 2025, the Pinedas opened Mena’s Donut House, named after their daughter.

The shop, located at 343 S. Greenwich Road, quickly became a neighborhood favorite, not only for its oversized donuts but for its vast menu of waffles, crepes, breakfast sandwiches, frappes, smoothies and more.

For the Pinedas, Mena’s Donut House is more than a business; it’s a reflection of their journey, their family and their gratitude for the community that welcomed them.

“We love the friendliness, simplicity and human quality of those who call Wichita home,” they said. “To anyone who has never visited Wichita, I promise you will not regret it.”

Mena’s Donut House is open Tuesday through Saturday from 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The family invites people to stop by, enjoy their sweet treats and experience the customer service they are so proud to provide.
