Why Chicago Native Chose Wichita & Why He’s Betting on Its Future

By Emily Barnwell

When Conor Adler packed up his life in Chicago to move to Wichita in 2024, he wasn’t necessarily aiming for the Midwest.

At the time, he was working as an operator in the startup world in the Windy City. He was looking to transition into early-stage risk capital with one requirement: go wherever the right opportunity presented itself.

“After many interviews, it became clear that the team at NXTUS had everything I was looking for: a down-to-earth, gritty attitude, high motivation and a small but mighty team genuinely committed to growing the Kansas and greater Heartland innovation ecosystem,” explained Adler.

The 30-year-old is now the capital programs manager for NXTUS, a Wichita nonprofit that helps innovators in the region launch and grow their startups.

He has been pleasantly surprised by the untapped potential for growth in the startup ecosystem.

“If you're putting in the work, people are quick to open up their networks. Things move faster here than in larger markets. That’s absolutely one of Wichita’s superpowers,” he shared.

Not “Honky Tonk”

Another superpower of Wichita’s is its ability to wow visitors.

“It’s less 'honky-tonk' than my friends and family assume. Two friends from New York visited for St. Paddy’s Day and left saying, ‘Wow, we were not expecting that—Wichita has an awesome bar and restaurant scene,’” Adler said.

Living in Delano, Adler has had a front-row seat to downtown’s momentum.

“There seem to be new developments popping up every week,” he says. “I’ve watched the neighborhood come alive over the past year.”

His go-to spots? The beer garden at Norton’s, the rooftop at Wichita Brewing Company in Delano and outdoor seating at The Monarch. On a perfect Saturday, you’ll find him running with his dog from the riverwalk to College Hill Park, followed by lunch at Larcher’s and a beer at Ziggy’s or Dempsey’s.

He even picked up a new habit since moving to Wichita—workout classes.

“I never thought I’d take workout classes, but I joined Orange Theory Downtown to meet people and get back in fighting shape. It’s a really strong community,” Adler shared.

Three Words That Sum It All Up

When asked to describe Wichita in three words, Adler didn’t hesitate: humble, gritty and hopeful.

“Wichita doesn’t brag,” he said. “People here are grounded and focused on the work. There’s a quiet confidence in knowing who you are.”

That humility, while admirable, can sometimes be a challenge. “We do need to get the word out about what’s happening here,” he shared. “Because there’s a lot happening.”

He described the city’s grit as something woven into its identity—resilient, resourceful and entrepreneurial. However, it’s the shared sense of optimism that makes him excited for what’s ahead.

“There’s a belief that Wichita’s best days are ahead. People here genuinely care and are working to shape the future.”

Advice for Newcomers

If you’re new to town, Adler has one piece of advice: put yourself out there.

“It might take some effort, but people will notice,” he says. “I’ve made friends here over the past year that already feel like family.”
