New to Wichita?

2020 Summer Intern Social Media Challenge

Because of COVID-19, this summer may look different than you planned. Canceled trips and virtual hangouts appear to be fate – but it doesn’t have to be. The Greater Wichita Partnership and W / A Community of Young Professionals have partnered to make sure you have the best summer experiencing this #RelentlesslyOriginal region. By participating in the 2020 Summer Intern Social Media Challenge, you can win sweet prizes, support local business and make the most of your summer in Wichita. All interns can join in (even if your internship was canceled or made virtual).

Even though the Social Media Challenge is complete, you can still make the most of your time in the Wichita region. Use the list of resources below, reach out to a Wichita Insider and share your experiences on social media with #RelentlesslyOriginal and #internICT. Thank you for participating!

Past Challenges

Challenge #1

The Kansas African American Museum provides a culminating experience of people, pride and place!  Serving as a cultural hub, it tells the story of the region’s rich and vibrant African American experiences including its impact here and across the country.

Your first challenge is to make your way to The Kansas African American Museum located at 601 N. Water in downtown Wichita, housed in historic Calvary Baptist Church. When you get there, read the plaques outside and find out who built it. Post a photo of the building and include your answer in your Twitter or Instagram post. Thanks to a donor, you can learn more about the African American history and heritage of our community free of charge - just let museum staff know you’re an intern. Don’t forget to check the museum's hours and read through the rules below!

Emmanuel, @e_tastic24, won $100 in gift cards to Dead Center Vintage, Artichoke Sandwichbar and Wichita Cheesecake Company Check out his submission on Twitter

Challenge #2

The largest acrylic mural in the world by a single artist resides on a grain elevator off of 21st Street in north Wichita. Visit the mural. (Because the land surrounding the mural is on private property, please view from 21st Street or at the intersection of 19th Street and Santa Fe only.) When you get there, watch this video. After taking in the mural’s meaning and magnificence, your challenge is to take a selfie with the monument and write a brief reflection in your caption on Twitter or Instagram. You can learn more about the project here

Caleb Limes won $100 in gift cards to Vortex Souvenir, Little Lion Café and Taco Locale and a sweet mug. Check out the Choose Wichita Intern Instagram highlight to view his winning post.

Challenge #4

The Pop-Up Urban Park transformed an eyesore in downtown Wichita into a venue for local food trucks and a gathering space for the public. Just like the Pop-Up Park was flipped, your challenge is to take a video of your attempt at the bottle flip challenge on one of the tables at the park (non-damaging trick shots welcome). Might as well go when there’s food trucks, right? Find the schedule here.

Spirit AeroSystems intern Ashlyn Jacobs, @jashlyn12, won a Wichita flag mug and almost $100 in gift cards to Public at the Brickyard, Cocoa Dolce and Lucinda's.  Check out the winning post on Twitter.

Challenge #5

You can’t talk about how #RelentlesslyOriginal Wichita is without mentioning the arts community. The Wichita Art Museum houses an impressive 10,000-piece art collection, including 13 sculptures in the Art Garden that surrounds the museum. Your challenge is to find an artwork – one that sparks your curiosity, catches your eye or just gives you the feels – and take a photo posing like the piece of art you chose. You can view the Art Garden 24/7 for free, take advantage of free admission on Saturdays or you can explore the museum’s collection here.

Lauren Page, @laurenofthepage, won a Wichita flag cup and nearly $100 in gift cards to the Wichita Art Museum Store, The Monarch and Milkfloat. Check out her winning post here.

Challenge #6

Your final challenge is to post a photo of a relentlessly original experience you’ve had in the Wichita region. It could be a restaurant, event, shop, organization, job – something that you can only do in Wichita that you find relentlessly original.
