Choosing Wichita Twice: A Veteran’s Story of Finding Home

Chief Master Sergeant (Ret.) Jason McAndrews has lived all over the country, from New Jersey to Oklahoma, Kansas and Georgia. However, Wichita is the place he’s chosen to put down roots not once, but twice.
The Army and Air Force veteran first moved to the ICT in 2002 after completing his service at Fort Riley. His wife was pursuing her master’s degree at Wichita State University (WSU), so it seemed like a natural fit.
Stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, they quickly fell in love with the people, the pace and the sense of belonging.
“Wichita is a community that rallies behind each other, supports each other and connects with each other,” said McAndrews.
That’s one of the reasons why, when McAndrews took a job in Oklahoma City, he decided to commute back to Wichita every weekend.
“I could’ve moved my family, but the cost of living, safety, schools, and job opportunities in Wichita were just too good. It didn’t make sense to leave,” he said.
Now retired from military service, Jason has once again planted roots in the heart of the country, this time leading Military Affairs for the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce. His mission? To help other military members and families discover what makes Wichita special.
“I can honestly say that Wichita is one of the most military-friendly communities I have ever been connected to. I was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base for almost 15 years, and in that time, we received no better treatment than from the citizens of Wichita, the Friends of McConnell, and the business community. They truly support the Airmen of that installation as well as the Army, Navy and Marines closely associated with us,” McAndrews explained.
Through his work at the Chamber, Jason helps strengthen that connection, tackling issues like childcare for service members, helping transitioning personnel find meaningful employment, and ensuring businesses tap into Wichita’s skilled and motivated military talent.
“It’s about retaining that talent here,” he shared. “When service members see how great life is in Wichita, they want to stay and that’s how our community continues to grow.”
To McAndrews, Wichita offers something increasingly hard to find: authenticity.
“Wichita is a local environment. When you're downtown, you know that you're not just around tourists. You are surrounded by locals. The energy of the town is visible, and it is a great environment to spend your time, take your family out and feel safe while doing so,” he said.
“From family-friendly neighborhoods and strong schools to a thriving culture of health and fitness, McAndrews explained, Wichita checks all the boxes for a balanced, fulfilling life. “You’ve got access to incredible facilities, events like NCAA tournaments, and big-city experiences all while maintaining a community feel.”
Jason’s advice for anyone considering a move?
“I would say do your research. Wichita has so many great parts of town that cater to different lifestyles. Explore the northeast, northwest, downtown, Riverside, and south Wichita to find the best fit for your family.”
